Asphalt Laborer

About the Role

Ensley is currently seeking a FULL-TIME ASPHALT LABORER to join our team and assist in the pouring, shoveling, and placing of asphalt for roads and parking lots. The ideal candidate will be responsible for various tasks, including delivering water to the rollers and plate compactors, preparing the pavement saw, measuring the line for the day, sweeping and raking the deck, working with the mill, directing traffic, and cleaning the work area at the end of the day.

To thrive in this role, you must be physically fit and capable of working extended hours in all weather conditions. Asphalt Laborers are often required to work over weekends, on public holidays, and at night.

Requirements

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Shovel, rake, and compact materials at road construction projects

  • Stand for long periods of time

  • Walk alongside the paver to shovel and rake areas of asphalt that require leveling

  • Must be capable of performing duties near traveled roadways and live traffic lanes

  • Must load, unload and properly clean tools and equipment

  • Routinely assist other team members in different areas of the paving project

  • Move and deliver tools, equipment and materials to locations throughout the job site

  • Effectively follow directions of Foreman as to daily tasks and expectations for specific project site or job site

  • Maintain acceptable attendance in a flexible work schedule

  • Properly follow & promote all company policies and OSHA regulations for safe working procedures and environment

  • Maintain a strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures

  • Travel and work at multiple construction sites within your geographic region

  • Perform other duties including but not limited to operating equipment

  • Possess a professional attitude while interacting with peers, contractors and general public


Qualifications and Skills:

  • Proven work experience as an asphalt laborer or flagger

  • Knowledge of road and traffic regulations

  • Ability to work as part of a team

  • Ability to work on weekends, public holidays, and at night

  • Ability to travel to wherever the job is needed

  • Ability to work for long hours in all weather conditions

  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time

  • Excellent communication and observation skills


Education/Training Requirement:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent


Certification/License Requirement:

  • A Valid and clean Florida CDL license is preferred


Physical Ability Requirements:

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs occasionally and 20 lbs regularly

  • Able to work with a shovel or rake for periods of time throughout the day

  • Shovel work can require handling from 10 lbs to 30 lbs on a regular basis

  • Pushing and pulling an asphalt rake is required

  • Job requires the following motions: stretching, bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, twisting, throwing, walking, standing, reaching, and squatting

  • Climbing onto and off equipment on a regular basis. This requires the use of hand and foot holds to mount and dismount the equipment. Must be able to climb without limitation or restriction

  • Operation of directional, speed, and operational controls on the equipment. This requires movement by hand of levers, switches and a steering wheel

  • A variety of other activities can be performed as needed such as flagging traffic, operating a vibratory tamp (to compact asphalt in tight places), or using hand tools and equipment
